Overview
Graduates who have a teaching degree, may use the degree to upgrade their qualifications or extend their professional knowledge by drawing on a wide range of education or education related subjects.
Specifically this may enable students to:
- complete a second specialist teaching area in a specified curriculum area;
- complete further studies in the content area of a specified secondary curriculum area;
- complete further studies in a new teaching area not originally covered in a currently held secondary teaching qualification;
- complete further studies to upgrade primary teaching qualifications to include high school accreditation;
- complete further studies to upgrade primary teachers with three year training qualifications to include a fourth year of training in their qualifications;
- complete further studies to upgrade high school teaching qualifications to include primary school accreditation;

obtain a Bachelor Degree as a pathway to becoming a Primary teacher through the Master of Teaching (Primary);

obtain a Bachelor Degree as a pathway to becoming a Secondary teacher through the Master of Teaching (Secondary);

complete studies for Charles Sturt University students in accredited teacher degrees who seek to exit their accredited degree and be awarded a general education degree.
Admission and Credit
Admission
- Minimum ATAR required (including adjustment factors)
OR - Successful completion of two university level subjects (AQF level Associate Degree or higher) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies
OR - A completed AQF Certificate III or higher level qualification
OR - 50% completion of an AQF Diploma level qualification
OR - Successful completion of a Tertiary Preparation Course from an Australian University or an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies
OR - Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) with an equivalent ranking to the currently listed ATAR
OR
Two years full-time (or equivalent) work experience that demonstrates the development of literacy, analytical skills, and social-historical knowledge.
Credit
- Transfer credit [TCR] can be awarded for previous study that directly aligns with a Charles Sturt University subject.
- Unspecified credit can be awarded for previous study that does not directly align with a Charles Sturt University subject.
- Students who have completed an AQF level 5 Diploma from a Registered Training Organisation (or equivalent qualification).
- Students who have completed an AQF Certificate III or Certificate IV in Education Support, OR School Based Education Support.
- Students who have completed an AQF Certificate IV in Youth Work and have at least one year of employment is a school setting.
- The content of that certificate aligns with a Primary or Secondary teaching area AND the applicant has at least one year of employment in a school setting.

Structure
At least 64 points (8 of the 24 subjects) of subjects completed at Charles Sturt University.
Key Notes for All Students:
The course retraining structures described in the following sections provide pathways for students to comply with accreditation requirements, but to graduate with one of the awards detailed above students must complete a minimum of 8 subjects offered at Charles Sturt.
In general, it is recommended that students complete Level 100 subjects (e.g. EED1XX) before completing Level 200 subjects (e.g. EED2XX), and Level 200 subjects before completing Level 300 (e.g. EED3XX) or Level 400 subjects (e.g. EED4XX).
At least 88 points (11 of the 16 subjects) in education-based or education-related discipline areas approved by the Course Director, including at least 4 subjects at Level 200 or above; and,
At least 64 points (8 of the 16 subjects) of subjects completed at Charles Sturt University.
at least 48 points (6 of the 8 subjects) in education-based or education-related discipline areas approved by the Course Director, and;
2 subjects of subjects completed at Charles Sturt University at Levels 100 and 200.
Applicants for a graduate entry Primary Teacher Education degree require the following criteria to be met within their Bachelor Degree:
Undergraduate and or/postgraduate study that includes the equivalent of one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) of subjects that identify with the NESA Key Learning Areas (KLAs) for K-6.
At Charles Sturt this equates to eight subjects. Of the eight subjects, four need to be within one of the seven primary teaching KLAs: English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS/HSIE), Personal Development, Health and Physical Education PDHPE, Arts, Science and Technology or Languages.
The following course structures meet the above requirements, whilst providing a solid foundation in Primary school knowledge areas. The course structures also provide an accelerated program towards completion of a graduate entry accredited Primary teaching qualification.
On completion of the below course structure, a student is eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary).
Students choose between SOC102 or SOC108, and
Students choose between HST311 or HST308
If you are choosing an additional HSIE teaching area [Business Studies, Economics, Geography, Legal Studies, Modern History, Society and Culture, Aboriginal Studies] replace EMH441 Curriculum Method 1: HASS/HSIE and EMH442 Curriculum Method 2: HASS/HSIE with EMH410 Curriculum Method: Senior HASS/HSIE and an Education Studies Elective.
Students who selected a Science teaching area as their first teaching area and want an additional Science as their Additional Teaching Area can choose one of the Science as an additional teaching area below.
Students who selected Information Technology as their First Teaching Area must choose the Information Technology subjects listed below as your Additional Teaching area [below].
Students complete all subjects listed below, and select three subjects from the Education Electives Subjects (see list below).
Note:
Students choose one subject between BIO112 or BIO216.
Students choose one subject between BIO328 or BIO203.
Students complete all subjects listed below, and select three subjects from the Education Electives Subjects (see list below).
Students complete all subjects listed in Group 1 below, then select two subjects in Group 2, and three subjects from the Education Electives Subjects (see list below).
Students complete ITC331 and ITC333 or ITC313 and then select six subjects from one of the Second teaching area groups (a student may choose a Second Teaching area not listed below with consultaion with the Course Administration Officer).

Students with Agricultural Tecnology as a first Teaching area must complete EMT446 Curriculum Method: Technologies as one of their elective subjects.
Students with Information Processes and Technology and Software Design and Development as their First Teaching area complete EMT443 Curriculum Method 1: Information Technology and EMT444 Curriculum Method 2: Information Technology as a substitute to these elective subjects.
In the Bachelor of Educational Studies, you may receive up to a year of subject credit (8 subjects). This allows completion of this degree in 2 years full-time study. Students can complete one year of study towards the Master of Teaching degree whilst completing the Bachelor of Educational Studies. Once you graduate from the Bachelor degree, you can then complete the Master of Teaching with a further year of study.
Students choose between EML102 and COM120.
Students also choose between MTH100 and MTH105.
Accreditation note: the suggested study requirements (advised below) is provided to conform with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Subject Content Knowledge Requirements. Charles Sturt University is not the accrediting body for retraining teachers; this authority lies with the employing agency of the teacher. It is recommended that students seek advice from employers regarding specific requirements for all teaching or retraining qualifications and accreditation.
First (Major) Teaching Area
The subject recommendations below allow a student to meet the NESA requirements for a First (Major) teaching area. NESA requirements for a Major teaching area are:
The equivalent of three-quarters of a year (0.75 Equivalent Full Time Study Load EFTSL) of discipline study. In most programs, this equates to six subjects, with no more than two subjects at first year level and no fewer than two subjects at third year level. Curriculum studies in a new teaching area may also be required; and a professional experience placement may also be required.

Second (Minor) Teaching Area
The subject recommendations below allow a student to meet the NESA requirements for a Second (Minor) teaching area.
The equivalent of a half a year (0.5 EFTSL) of discipline study. In most programs, this equates to four subjects; with no more than two subjects at first year level. Note that not all teaching areas can be undertaken as a minor.

2 Discipline subjects at Level 200 and/or 300

2 Curriculum Method subjects

Enrolment pattern
Due to the wide variety of possible paths through the Bachelor of Education Studies, it is not possible to specify an enrolment pattern. Students will receive advice from the Course Director (Bachelor of Educational Studies) or relevant Course Director (Secondary or Primary) about subjects that best suit their needs and interests. It will be the student's responsibility to select subjects based on this advice, subject availability, prerequisites, assumed knowledge, and/or enrolment restrictions.
