Abstract
The philosophy of the analytical method is introduced via a study of commonly used analytical techniques. The latter include chromatographic, spectroscopic and electrochemical procedures. Classical wet chemical methods are reviewed.
Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics:
Terminology of analytical chemistry (accuracy, precision, sensitivity, detection limit, selectivity, specificity, etc.);The analytical method;Comparison of analytical techniques;Electrochemical analysis;Chromatographic analysis;Spectroscopic analysis; andFlow injection analysis.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
describe and apply the analytical approach to qualitative and quantitative analysis including the need for accuracy and precision;
2.
perform basic gravimetric, volumetric, chromatographic, electrochemical and spectroscopic calculations; and
3.
explain the principles of and perform wet chemical and instrumental techniques used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
