Abstract

This subject is designed for students who enter university without a strong background in mathematics and who need to raise their knowledge and skills in mathematics to a higher standard.

Syllabus

Basic mathematics skills.Algebra.Graphs and functions.Measurement.Geometry.Trigonometry.Application to Finance.Probability.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
be able to successfully apply mathematical skills and processes across a wide range of topic areas;
2.
be able to communicate mathematical ideas and reasoning clearly and effectively using symbols, numbers, words, diagrams and graphs;
3.
be able to describe and model patterns in mathematical terms;
4.
be able to construct and use diagrams to solve mathematical problems;
5.
be able to make and justify informed decisions about financial situations based on appropriate models;
6.
be able to solve problems involving uncertainty using the basic principles of probability;
7.
be able to demonstrate the purposes and functions of mathematics in the community.

Enrolment restrictions

Not available to students who have completed MTH101, MTH105, or any equivalent or higher level mathematics subject.
Only available to students enrolled in courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Education.
