Overview
A principal aim of this course is to prepare graduates who can positively impact school students’ learning through safe and effective teaching. To achieve this, the program develops and extends upon the teacher education students’ industry discipline knowledge and skills, and develops their pedagogical knowledge and skills to enable them to teach in their discipline area.
The development of knowledge and understanding in inclusive and culturally responsive teaching, authentic learning and assessment, professional practice, the ability to think critically, and apply research-based pedagogical approaches are other key foci. Through this process, the intention is that the program will develop graduates who are able to create culturally respectful inclusive classrooms with differentiated instruction as needed, so that they make a valued contribution to their school and wider community
Admission and Credit
Admission
Information Technology
- An accredited Associate Diploma / Diploma in Information Technology / Computing completed through a Registered Training Organisation; and
- five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
Food Technology
- An accredited Associate Diploma / Diploma in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) / Food Science, completed through a Registered Training Organisation; and
- five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation that will require submission of a questionnaire. or
- full chef qualifications (Apprenticeship and Trade Certificate III in Commercial Cookery); and
- three to five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
Industrial Technology
- Trade qualified (Apprenticeship and Trade Certificate III) in Fitting and Turning/Machining; Metals Engineering; Carpentry; Joinery; or related areas; or
- Trade qualified (Apprenticeship and Trade Certificate III) in Automotive Mechanic; Diesel/Plant Mechanic; Electrical Mechanic; Electrician/Electronics; Plumbing; or related area; and
- three to five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
Agricultural Technology
- Accredited Associate Diploma Agricultural College (National or International) - two-year full time program or equivalent, completed through a Registered Training Organisation; and
- five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
Textiles Technology
- An accredited Associate Diploma / Diploma in Fashion and Design completed through a Registered Training Organisation; and
- five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); and
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
Graphics and Multimedia Technology
- Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Building Design with a minimum of five years industry experience (Graphics); or
- Draftsperson trade and Certificate IV Residential Drafting with a minimum of seven years in industry including the period of training (Graphics) ; or
- Advanced Diploma of Multimedia with a minimum of five years industry experience (Multimedia); or
- Certificate III in Animation with a minimum of seven years in industry including the period of training (Multimedia); or
- Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology (multimedia electives) with a minimum of seven years in industry including the period of training (Multimedia); or
- Cert IV in Information Technology specialising in multimedia with a minimum of seven years in industry including the period of training (multimedia); AND
- five years (post training) recent industry experience in field of qualification (minimum total of seven years full time work including period of training); AND
- demonstrated ability to design and implement solutions to problems and needs in their technology specialisation evidenced by satisfactory responses to a questionnaire.
- Two years or more of a relevant degree e.g. Mathematics / Engineering / Econometrics / Economics / Actuarial Studies, where Mathematics and Applied Mathematics are inclusive within the program (with one Mathematics subject at level 1 and one at level 2 and no more than one Statistics subject);
and - one year of recent employment/industry experience aligned to course content.
or - A minimum of two years university study towards a degree including a sequence of at least two Mathematics subjects (one at level 1 and one at level 2 and no more than one Statistics subject);
and - one year of recent employment/industry experience aligned to course content.
- Two years or more of a degree with a minimum of two years university study including a sequence of at least two subjects from one or more of the following areas: literature, communications, media studies, creative writing and linguistics (one subject must be at level 1 and one at level 2 or higher);
and - one year of recent employment/industry experience aligned to course content.
- Two years or more of a degree with a minimum of two years university study including a sequence of at least two subjects from one or more of the following areas: biology; chemistry; physics (one subject must be at level 1 and one at level 2 or higher);
and - one year of recent employment/industry experience aligned to course content.
- One of: Geography or Modern History or Business Studies
- Two years or more of a degree with a minimum of two years university study including a sequence of at least two subjects from at least one the following areas: geography; modern history; business studies (one subject must be at level 1 and one at level 2 or higher);
and - one year of recent employment/industry experience aligned to course content.
Language requirements
- Born in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA, or United Kingdom, and have completed at least one senior secondary or tertiary qualification in one of these countries. This qualification must have been taught and assessed in English;
OR - Not born in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA, or United Kingdom, but have completed senior secondary study or at least three years of full-time university study (or equivalent) in one of these countries, and the language in which the qualification was taught and assessed was English;
OR - Completed a minimum overall Academic IELTS score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening) or a qualification deemed equivalent. Testing results must be obtained within two years from the date of your application for admission;
OR - International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) with a score of Level 4 in all four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, undertaken at approved testing sites where the assessment is teacher focused. Testing results must be within two years from the date of your application for admission.

Additional Teaching Areas
With approval from the Course Director, where a student commences the program with four or more appropriate subjects in their first teaching area (with two or more of these at level 2) it may be possible to complete the discipline content and curriculum studies for an additional teaching area. This may include other teaching areas such as:

Initial teacher education students are required to pass both components of the personal Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) as part of the accreditation requirements of this course and before commencement of the final professional experience placement. Listed below are the subjects required for each teaching area. Students will undertake only one of these areas and the subjects required are determined by the students' existing industry background as approved by Course Director - these subjects may include, but are not restricted to:
* Industrial Technology (3 or 5 subjects) sets of subjects, depending on teaching area to be completed and existing qualifications - Timber Construction, or Metal Fabrication, or Electrical/Electronics or Automotive or Plumbing, or Graphics or Multimedia.

* Food Technology;
or
* Textiles Technology;
or
* Agricultural Technology;
or
* Information Technology.

Subjects are focussed on enhancing and extending the students' existing Mathematics skills and broadening discipline knowledge. Students must complete the core compulsory Mathematics discipline subject (MTH102) and 5 other Mathematics restricted elective discipline subjects.By completion of study students must have completed a sequence of study in pure and applied Mathematics with a minimum of six Mathematics discipline subjects (including prior study deemed relevant to this program). These must include two appropriate subjects at Level 100; three at level 200 and two at level 300/400 or above.
Subjects must include algebra and calculus and in total, only one unit of statistics may be counted in this Mathematics major, provided it is studied as a stand-alone unit. A student may only include other discipline subject/s as their restricted elective discipline subjects if the Course Director determines they have sufficient current Mathematics content to meet the accreditation criteria for Secondary Mathematics as a first designated teaching area.
By completion of the course students must have completed a minimum of six subject sequence of English studies subjects (including prior study deemed relevant to this program), with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300. This must comprise a minimum of three subjects with a strong core of textual studies including literature. Other subjects may include studies in communications, creative writing, linguistics, media studies.
A student may only include other restricted elective discipline subject/s if the Course Director determines they have sufficient current English studies content to meet the accreditation criteria for Secondary English as a first designated teaching area.
Biology: a total of 6 Biology subjects with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300.
Chemistry: a total of 6 Chemistry subjects with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300.
Physics: a total of 6 Physics subjects with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300.
A student may only include other discipline subject/s as their restricted elective discipline subjects if the Course Director determines they have sufficient content to meet the accreditation criteria for Biology or Chemistry or Physics as a first designated teaching area.
Chemistry: Select six (6) Chemistry subjects with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300.
Physics: Select six (6) Physics subjects with two subjects at level 100, two subjects at level 200 and two subjects at level 300.
Subjects are focussed on enhancing and extending the students' existing study and broadening discipline knowledge in one of the following HSIE strands as a first teaching area: Modern History or Geography or Business Studies. Students must complete six restricted elective discipline subjects to ensure that by completion of study they will have completed a six subject sequence of study (including prior study deemed relevant to this program) in at least one of the Modern History or Geography or Business Studies teaching areas. The subjects in the student's HSIE first teaching area must include four appropriate subjects at level 100 and level 200, with no more than two level 100 subjects and two at level 300 or above, and cover the content for at least one of the teaching areas as noted below:
