Overview

The Charles Sturt dentistry course aims to graduate students who are registrable with the Dental Board of Australia as general dental practitioners. As such Charles Sturt dental graduates will have knowledge, skills and application attributes that align with AQF, Charles Sturt Graduate Learning Outcomes and Australian Dental Council defined attributes and competencies. Collectively these attributes and required outcomes broadly cover the domains of Ethics and Professionalism, Communication Skills and Social Skills, Global Citizenship, Scientific Knowledge and Competency in Patient Care with a focus on rural -regional Australian contexts.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
1.
be able to demonstrate ethical standards in the treatment of patients;
2.
be able to demonstrate skills in communication that match the needs of patients, colleagues and associates within their profession;
3.
be able to understand and abide by the appropriate legal requirements for the practice of the profession;
4.
be able to demonstrate an understanding of the unique health care requirements of, and be able to provide, effective oral health care for Fist Nations and rural and remote Australians;
5.
be able to demonstrate an understanding of research methods and their place in dental science;
6.
be able to undertake the full range of duties of a dentist in keeping with the underlying scientific evidence as defined by the Dental Board of Australia;
7.
be able to demonstrate both respect for all patients (independent of culture, language or background) and an understanding of social justice in the broad sense;
8.
be able to demonstrate the appropriate skills to maintain the legal rights of the patient particularly with relevance to confidentiality and consent;
9.
be able to understand and abide by the appropriate health and safety requirements for the ethical practice of the profession;
10.
be able to understand and apply clinical and scientific principles related to the management of oral and dental conditions across all population groups in the community;
11.
be able to accept and implement the required lifelong learning skills and commitment to continuous professional development to ensure maintenance of skills and knowledge for contemporary practice;
12.
be able to demonstrate a commitment to effective oral health promotion at the individual and community level.
