Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Ageing and physiologic changes;Ageing and disease burdens;Speech and the elderly;Care facilities and support structures;Medications and the elderly and dental implications;Special needs patients and their management;Ageing and oral-maxillofacial tissues; andOral-maxillofacial diseases of significance in the elderly.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the particular needs of elderly-aged dental patients in the context of an ability to provide competent dental care;
2.
describe the broad physiologic and disease associations of ageing;
3.
demonstrate knowledge of the effects of ageing on oral-maxillofacial tissues; and
4.
demonstrate knowledge of oral diseases of significance in the elderly.
