Overview

Students exiting with the Graduate Diploma in Speech and Language will have specialised knowledge and skills in communication and swallowing across the lifespan. They will work with Speech Pathologists to apply their advanced and integrated understanding to plan, implement and evaluate strategies that address both communication and swallowing difficulties. The course has a strong focus on developing students' awareness and skills in working with other health and education professionals, with communities and families. It is also committed to rural and remote health, social justice, cultural safety and issues of access and equity. The Graduate Diploma of Speech and Language allows students to exit the program with knowledge and skills in speech and language. This exit point is not sufficient for practice as a speech pathologist in Australia.

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

draw on a range of communication strategies and apply them appropriately in a variety of practice contexts

apply research principles and practices relevant to the assessment and analysis of sensory-motor skills for communication and swallowing

apply research principles and practices relevant to the assessment and analysis of language, interaction and cognitive functions
6.
critically reflect on how professional practices, ethical frameworks, and socio-cultural contexts facilitate or challenge access and equity of service provision
7.
work with speech pathologists to plan, implement, and evaluate interventions targeting sensory-motor functions (speech, voice, fluency and swallowing)
8.
work with speech pathologists to plan, implement, and evaluate interventions targeting language, interaction and cognitive functions
