In this subject, students develop competence in speech pathology assessment of language, cognition and multimodal communication with reference to acquired and developmental impairments. Students critique theory, empirical research and holistic frameworks to plan and justify assessment across paediatric and adult populations. A key focus of this subject is the development of skills in the collection, analysis and interpretation of assessment data using both standardised and non-standardised procedures. Students critique the holistic context of clients to evaluate and justify appropriateness of assessment planning, procedures and interpretation. Clinical reasoning and communication skills are developed through communicating assessment procedures and outcomes with a range of specialist and non-specialist audiences.

This subject will cover the following topics:

• Planning and justifying assessment of language, literacy, social communication and cognition;
• Collection of data for standardised and non-standardised assessment;
• Role of play and cognition in language and communication assessment;
• Analysis and interpretation of language, literacy, social communication and cognition assessment data;
• Holistic identification and analysis of client strengths, communication needs and environment, including the role of augmented assistive communication (AAC); and
• Multilingual/multidialectal language assessment.
