Overview

The course aims to provide a pathway for paramedics to work in the specialist paramedic post qualification roles of Intensive Care or Extended Care. It builds on existing qualifications and experience, allowing students to further their careers as discipline specialists. Students will also develop skills in applied research and will have the opportunity to engage in a small applied research project.

Graduates specialising in the critical care stream will have expert, specialised skills in advanced critical care (i.e. Intensive Care Paramedic, Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance, Critical Care). They will be able to integrate advanced medical care, respiratory care, cardiac care, and trauma techniques into their current practice and make expert judgements that ensure patients have the highest possible care in a range of acute paramedic situations.

Graduates specialising in the extended care stream will have expert, specialised skills in advanced extended care (I.e. Extended Care Paramedic, Community Paramedic). They will be able to integrate their intensive skill enhancement and training in areas such as advanced medical examination, risk assessment, and patient management to determine the most appropriate disposition for the patient for a range of common medical issues, and refer patients to other health providers.
