Abstract

This subject requires students to undertake clinical placements in an advanced clinical setting. In this subject, students have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision. It develops the role of the paramedic as a clinician and builds on the model of paramedic clinical competence in the context of advanced paramedic clinical practice. During the period of 120-140 hours on clinical placement, students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their clinical skills in the management of patients with health conditions in a supervised clinical placement.

Assessment and management of patients with acute clinical presentationsImplementation of advanced critical/extended patient care skillsAssessment and management of patients with chronic clinical presentationsProblem solving approaches with patients with simple and complex health issues

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to critically appraise and identify professional capabilities, identify own learning needs and suitable experiences to maintain current clinical knowledge and skill in the paramedic environment.

Be able to articulate the paramedic role in the advanced clinical setting and demonstrate autonomy, leadership, advanced clinical judgement, professionalism, responsibility, accountability and reflection.

Be able to apply relevant theoretical knowledge in the implementation of advanced paramedic management, clinical tasks and techniques in the health care clinical environment.

Be able to use discipline-specific language necessary to assess and interpret data, convey ideas, develop plans of care and implement therapeutic interventions.

Be able to perform as an effective team member and work with other health care professionals to provide appropriate patient care.

Restricted to students enrolled in postgraduate paramedic study.

Placement

Duration 140 hours

Details Students are required to complete a 120-140 hour clinical placement (10-15 days). This may occur in a number of settings, such as:

Critical Care: In-hospital placement (operating theatre, intensive care unit, etc.).Operational on-road critical care placement.

Extended Care: Operational on-road Extended care paramedics (ECPs) placement.In-hospital placements (emergency department).Community nursing/remote area practice setting.

Paramedic service shifts may be up to 12 hours in duration, hospital shifts are likely closer to 8 hours duration. Thus the reasons for the varied days duration of the clinical placement.
