Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
identify and describe risks to the horse’s natural body defence mechanisms in various horse husbandry settings;
2.
identify evidence-based risk factors and generate a causal web for common equine diseases demonstrating their multifactorial nature;
3.
recognise and explain the risk of infection and spread to equine establishments and implement practical biosecurity measures;
4.
identify and perform practical parasite control measures to customise a program targeting equine internal parasites;
5.
observe and identify the influence of horse management on disease risk and justify preventative healthcare measures; and
6.
review and communicate information within the scientific literature.

Enrolment restrictions

This subject is primarily for students in the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Equine Science (Business Management) courses. Students studying other animal based courses may be admitted with the permission of the Subject Coordinator and appropriate Course Director.
