Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
Describe the limitations of equine learning with respect to their ethology and cognition;
2.
Discuss the effectiveness of training methods in a range of horse uses and disciplines and practically apply evidence-based training practices;
3.
Identify and explain the causes of difficulties in training and provide strategies for their resolution consistent with learning theory principles;
4.
Discuss the horse-human relationship and its influence on effective horse training; and
5.
Identify appropriate communication methods for use in the discussion of equine training and behaviour and be able to communicate effectively both orally and/or in writing.
Enrolment restrictions
This subject is primarily for students in the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Equine Science (Business Management) courses. Students studying other animal-based courses may be admitted with the permission of the Subject Coordinator and appropriate Course Director. Places are limited due to teaching horse numbers and welfare considerations.
