Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics:
Equine homeostatic processes;Introduction to disease in the horse;Disease processes in the horse;Wound management in the horse; andLegal aspects of equine first aid.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
Outline the processes involved in maintaining homeostasis in the horse;
2.
Identify and describe the disruptions to homeostasis that impact on the health of the equid;
3.
Recognise and assess severity of diseases in the horse from first principles and outline management strategies;
4.
Outline and demonstrate appropriate first aid measures and practical skills for a range of conditions;
5.
Explain the basic wound healing process and discuss appropriate management strategies; and
6.
Outline the legal aspects of first aid management of horses under your care.
Enrolment restrictions
This subject is primarily for students in the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Science (Business Management) course. Students studying other animal based courses may be admitted with the permission of the Subject Coordinator and their Course Director.
