Abstract

Physiotherapy Competency Placement 3 provides physiotherapy students with further opportunity to undertake a 25 day sustained period of physiotherapy clinical practice in a workplace setting. The purpose of this 25 day clinical placement is to enable students to further develop and consolidate knowledge, skills and attributes in professional physiotherapy practice; client assessment; clinical reasoning; intervention planning; implementation of physiotherapy management; demonstrate leadership skills; and evaluate the effectiveness of management strategies. The placement setting undertaken in PHS418 will differ from other workplace learning subjects to ensure students cover the full range of areas required for registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and course completion. Students' learning will be enabled through direct client contact under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists and other health professionals. Students will integrate knowledge from their university studies into clinical practice. Students will be assessed for their achievement of the Australian Standards for Physiotherapy using the criteria and forms developed for use in the Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice (APP).

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Safe and competent practice in a broad range of physiotherapy skills;Clinical reasoning and problem solving processes;Critical appraisal of knowledge and skills;Application of knowledge and skills in the workplace;Self-appraisal of professional practice capabilities;Professional practice roles and responsibilities; andLeadership in clinical practice.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours).

PHS418 is offered in the same session as two (2) other workplace learning subjects PHS416 and PHS417. PHS418 precedes PHS419 and is subsequent to PHS417.

Placement Duration 160 hours Details Students will assessed using the national competency assessment tool, the APP and on successful completion of the placement will have demonstrated safe and effective professional practice in the allocated placement setting and client context. 25 days (approx 160hrs)

Students attending compulsory workplace learning placements are responsible for all associated travel, uniform, accommodation and required resources. The cost of travel and accommodation of these placements are the responsibility of the students.

Students attending compulsory workplace learning placements are responsible for all associated travel, uniform, accommodation and required resources.

Students must meet pre-clinical requirements prior to undertaking workplace learning placements. Students who have not met all pre-clinical requirements will not be allocated a workplace learning placement and will fail PHS418. These requirements, mandated by the State Department of Health and the University include but are not limited to vaccinations, first aid certification, police clearance and working with children checks. Costs incurred are the responsibility of the students. Students who do not meet these requirements will need to re-do the subject.
