Mental health is about the study, diagnosis, treatment and management of mental illness and mental disorders. This subject focuses on clinical features, classification, assessment, treatment and risk management issues of mental illness and mental disorders from a trauma focused perspective. Using the DSM 5 and ICD 11, diagnostic criteria will be evaluated. Students will look at a range of assessment tools that are used in the assessment process including the Mental Status Examination and Risk Assessment. Students will be equipped with the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills to use these tools to undertake an assessment, contribute to clinical formulation, and develop treatment and management plans in collaboration with significant others i.e. carers, partners and identified support workers. Culturally responsive models of assessment, diagnosis and care within existing legislative frameworks and industry standards in mental health will be examined.
