Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
define the key mental health disorders/illnesses and describe their prevalence, clinical features and treatments;
2.
explain the recovery and resilience framework for mental health and the inclusion of family in contemporary mental health services;
3.
describe mental health classification systems and mental health legislation used throughout Australia;
4.
initiate and document a comprehensive mental health assessment including a mental status examination and a mental health risk assessment;
5.
describe the principles involved in providing culturally responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental health disorders;
6.
discuss a range of treatment modalities used in mental health including medication groups prescribed for different mental illness and mental health disorders; and
7.
critically discuss within a team environment, management and treatment options for clients with a range of mental health disorders and to effectively advocate for these clients.
