This subject introduces students to the concept of lifespan development and how paramedic practice may be influenced by physiological changes. Students will investigate neonatal, paediatric, obstetric and elderly patients in relation to physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development. Paramedic assessment and management of disorders relating to these life changes are explored within the tutorial, practical and simulated environments.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Paramedic identification and management of obstetric, neonatal, paediatric and geriatric presentations; andTheoretical principles and clinical skills relating to assessment and management of obstetric, neonatal, paediatric and geriatric patients.

Available only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) Bachelor of Paramedicine and Bachelor of Paramedicine (Honours).

Learning activities

Intensive School

The Bachelor of Paramedicine is currently accredited by the Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA). In aligning to the accreditation policy, face to face time is required when teaching and assessing clinical practice skills. The online subject and internal subject must have equity in teaching standards.

The purpose of the intensive is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student. Allowing them an opportunity to receive timely feedback and support from the hands on experience. CLS202 is a fundamental paramedic skills subject that incorporates skills such as learning how to talk to a child to how to deliver a baby. Many of these skills require supervised practice before allowing the student autonomy in the clinical environment.

Current activities that will be included into the intensive for CLS202 are:

* Simulated child birth scenarios and learning activities; and* Interdisciplinary learning activities with related disciplines to deliver optimal care to the elderly and specialised groups.

Students attending compulsory intensive schools on Charles Sturt campuses will incur costs associated with travel, accommodation and required resources.

All students are required to have a lab coat, safety glasses and covered footwear for lab based practicals.
