Integrating Paramedic Medical Science

Abstract

In this subject students will integrate the principles of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, psychology and sociology with assessment findings and patient histories to formulate a differential diagnosis and implement a treatment plan for the patient with a presenting medical condition. This subject will investigate disease processes in all age ranges, including paediatric, adult and geriatric patients and ensure that evidence based practice is reviewed in all treatment plans and rationale. Students will learn effective communication techniques to ensure sound ethical and professional treatment plans are developed in consultation with their patients' and their families'. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on their own practice during simulated activities and encouraged to review evidence-based practice and promote patient-centred care.

Enrolment restrictions

Enrolment is restricted to students in the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic), Bachelor of Paramedicine, Bachelor of Paramedicine (Honours).

Intensive School

Current activities that will be included into the intensive school for BMS317 are:

* Engage in and discuss advanced clinical reasoning processes to enhance patient-centred care;* Demonstrate safe and effective medical management of a patient with complex medical presentations;* Demonstrate safe and autonomous and effective patient management in the medical environment;* Perform advanced clinical interventions safely and effectively on medical patients;* Demonstrate sound ethical and professional disposition including effective communication with patients, bystanders, the paramedic team, and other health care professionals; and* Engage in reflective, evidence based practice activities to ensure optimal patient-centred care is understood and practiced.

Students attending compulsory intensive schools on Charles Sturt campuses will incur costs associated with travel, accommodation and required resources. All students are required to have a lab coat, safety glasses and covered footwear for lab based practicals.
