In this subject, students consider the colonial foundations of Western knowledge paradigms and research practices and how these impact on Australian First Nations peoples. Students will increase their understanding and awareness of Indigenous and Indigenist research methods and methodologies and critically analyse the research practices of their future discipline. Through reflexive analysis of their own standpoint, students are encouraged to question their assumptions about research and consider how to conduct respectful research in Australian contexts.

Analyse and critically reflect on historical and contemporary research practices relating to Australian First Nations peoples and critically evaluate the social, historical, and political discourses that informed them.

Select and critically review scholarly literature to provide insights into relationships between First Nations considerations, the researcher and future research practice.

Recognise the importance and value of community engagement, cultural protocols, reciprocity and shared decision making in research partnerships.

Identify Indigenous and Indigenist research frameworks and methodologies, their cultural relevance, ethical implications and application within academic contexts.
