In this subject, students prepare for and undertake their first speech pathology clinical block placement. Students also engage with theory of clinical education and clinical reflection, providing them with a foundation on which to develop their clinical skills. This subject focuses on supporting students to integrate their learning and apply knowledge and skills to specific populations and speech pathology range of practice areas.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to administer formal and informal assessment of communication and swallowing, in familiar situations according to guidelines provided

be able to integrate and interpret assessment and/or intervention data to establish plans for further assessment or intervention

be able to implement a range of effective therapeutic skills, in familiar situations, with a low degree of supervision

be able to integrate knowledge, skills and attributes with the support of a clinical educator, to plan and provide speech pathology assessment and intervention appropriate for a specific workplace or population

be able to reflect on development of competency and identify specific goals and strategies for ongoing learning

Restricted to students enrolled in the Master of Speech Pathology.

Details This subject contains a compulsory 15 day (approx 112hrs) workplace learning experience. The workplace learning in this subject focuses on developing competency through the integration of their knowledge, skills and attributes. Students complete workplace learning experiences with collaborative partners that enable control of client complexity and environment factors. This ensures appropriate experiences for the student level of development and early identification of at risk students.
