Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics
Plants and people: evolution, domestication and taxonomy;Plant molecules and cells;Photosynthesis and respiration;Growth, development and the plant life cycle;Flowers, fruits and seeds;Structure and function of stems, roots and leaves;Plant symbioses;Whole-plant biology: water and sugar movement; andPlant behaviour and environmental responses.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
explain the importance of flowering plants for life on earth;
2.
classify and distinguish between major plant groups and features, and name plants using binomial nomenclature;
3.
describe plant metabolic, cellular and developmental processes;
4.
identify and describe the structure of plant cells, tissues and organs, and relate these to their functions;
5.
collect, record, interpret and communicate experimental results; and
6.
apply knowledge from discrete topics to interpret and explain whole-plant biology.
Enrolment restrictions
Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Wine Science, Bachelor of Wine Business and Bachelor of Viticulture courses, or as approved by the Course Director.
