This subject explores community development theory and practice as it relates to human services. Students examine key concepts in community development and practice, including grassroots engagement, empowerment pedagogies, the role of new social movements, critical perspectives in community development and practice, the relevance of post-colonial theory to community development practices and Indigenous Australian perspectives of community development. It also covers a range of community development skills and strategies as well as contemporary barriers and threats to community development. The subject equips students to be able to engage diverse communities at different scales and to engage in community development aimed at promoting empowerment, social justice, environmental and ecological justice and human rights.
