The subject will cover the following topics: The history of landscape design;Contemporary styles in landscape design;Design philosophy and Genius loci;Aesthetic principles of landscape design;The design process;Hard landscape design;Soft landscape design;Plant selection - natives and exotics;Sustainable practice;Drawing principles - graphic language and communication; andFormulating landscape design plans.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
describe the historical evolution of landscape design and discuss how history has influenced contemporary styles of landscape design;
2.
identify the cultural and philosophical ideologies that influence landscape design;
3.
identify a selection of plants and evaluate their suitability to fulfill a range of design elements in a given site;
4.
justify the selection of hard landscaping elements to suit a given site;
5.
apply sustainability principles to landscape materials and design elements;
6.
describe various graphic presentation principles and formats and demonstrate how they are used; and
7.
explain the features of the design process and apply them to create an original landscape design.
