Abstract

This subject introduces students to classical thermodynamics, providing a foundation for understanding energy transfer, work, and heat interactions within engineering systems. Emphasis is placed on the application of thermodynamic principles to analyse and design thermodynamic cycles commonly encountered, such as power cycles and refrigeration cycles.

Syllabus

Introduction to Thermodynamics Energy and the First Law of Thermodynamics Properties of Pure Substances The Second Law of Thermodynamics Thermodynamic Cycles Introduction to Gas Mixtures and Psychrometrics

2. Online Exam

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
Apply the fundamental laws and principles of classical thermodynamics;
2.
Compare thermodynamic processes using property diagrams and equations of state;
3.
Apply thermodynamic concepts to analyse power cycles, refrigeration cycles, and other engineering systems; and
4.
Examine the performance of thermodynamic cycles and identify areas for improvement.
