Abstract
This subject introduces theoretical principles and fundamentals of structural engineering, focusing on linear elastic analysis of structural systems commonly encountered in civil engineering projects. Emphasis is on developing a fundamental understanding of structural behaviour and applying engineering principles to solve simple structural engineering problems.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
Apply fundamental principles of structural mechanics to analyse the behaviour of structural elements under various loading conditions;
2.
Use linear structural analysis methods to determine internal forces, deflections, and stability of simple structural systems; and
3.
Use manual and computer-based approach to design basic structural elements.
