Abstract
This subject focuses on the behaviour of soils and rocks in civil engineering. Students will learn various tests to determine the engineering properties of soil and rock. Emphasis is on developing students' understanding of the fundamentals of soil and rock behaviour and the skills to analyse civil engineering problems.

Assessment items
1. Soil and Rock Classification
2. Settlement and Consolidation
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
Classify soils and rocks based on standardized classification systems and test their physical and mechanical properties;
2.
Understand the importance of water and the influence of seepage on soil; and
3.
Assess soil settlement and consolidation processes.
