Abstract
Students will learn practical skills in histological techniques. This subject will examine the practice of basic routine histological techniques, including surgical cut-up, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining of tissues using routine and specialised techniques. In addition, specialised histological techniques and the science behind these techniques will be covered. This … For more content click the Read More button below.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency in the preparation of routine formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections;
2.
demonstrate proficiency in haematoxylin and eosin staining, selected special stains and immunohistochemical methods;
3.
identify the causes of technical defects in histological preparations, how to solve such defects and how they could influence the diagnostic process;
4.
explain the importance of quality assurance and health and safety procedures pertinent to the histopathology laboratory; and
5.
analyse sections that have undergone special stains to enable a pathological analysis of the tissues.
