Abstract

This subject prepares the student for working with clients through the processes of loss, grief, and change. Issues related to changes in health status, bereavement, relationship loss, migration and cultural status are considered.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
be able to evaluate and critically discuss a range of conceptualisations of the experience of grief, loss and change;
2.
be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of self-awareness around how their own history of grief, loss and change may enhance or interfere with their provision of effective psychosocial support/counselling;
3.
be able to demonstrate their understanding of normal human reactions when confronted with loss and the influence of personal and social variables in shaping these; and
4.
be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of what is involved in assessing for issues of grief, loss and change in situations where these may, or may not, be relevant.

Assumed knowledge

This is a fourth -year level subject. Academic capacity, study skills, and writing and research skills at fourth year level are expected.
