Integrating Competency for Entry Level Practice in Speech Pathology

Abstract

In this subject, students develop and demonstrate competency in speech pathology practice as required by an Entry level speech pathologist. Students complete two key workplace learning experiences; the first is a 24 day workplace learning block in which students work with clinical educators to develop speech pathology knowledge, skills and attributes to Entry level as defined by professional standards. During the 24 day placement for this subject, students work with a different population (paediatric or adult) and in a different practice setting to SPH515 Integrating Speech Pathology Competency in the Workplace. During the second WPL experience, students complete simulated and/or specialist clinical experiences during the Intensive School, transferring their speech pathology competency across a range of practice areas. Throughout these experiences, students continue to transfer their competency in professionalism, reasoning, communication and lifelong learning and demonstrate these as appropriate of an Entry level speech pathologist.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Development of professional identity and professional socialisation;Transfer of speech pathology knowledge, skills and attributes in workplace contexts; and Critical reflection for lifelong learning.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Master of Speech Pathology.

Learning activities

Intensive School

Students undertake a summative Intensive School at the end of SPH525 that will be delivered either online and/or on-campus. During this experience they undertake a final specialist clinic, and complete the capstone assessment. Students will transfer knowledge, skills and attributes to new clinical and simulated settings, and demonstrate Entry level competency as defined by the professional standards for Entry level speech pathologists. Students are responsible for expenses associated with attendance at the Intensive School, including costs of travel, accommodation, uniform and resource development. Students must also have access to a digital voice recorder for all clinical sessions.
