The subject will cover the following topics: Module 1 – Pain: pain pathophysiology; acute and chronic pain; pain assessment techniques; pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical pain management; analgesic medicines; consultation with and/or referral to other health professionals about potential medicines and the treatment plan, where appropriate. Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
evaluate pain as a presenting symptom and assess the impact on a person’s functional ability;
2.
evaluate the aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of a range of peripheral and central nervous system pathologies;
3.
explain appropriate assessment techniques and management options for a range of peripheral and central nervous system pathologies;
4.
justify pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions for collaborative management of acute and chronic pain; and
5.
discuss the role of a podiatrist in multidisciplinary management of pain and nervous system pathology, including referral of a person when suitable treatment options are outside scope of practice.

Assumed knowledge

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Foundational skills in the neurological assessment of the lower limb.

Enrolment restrictions

Restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor Podiatric Medicine or Bachelor Podiatric Medicine (Honours).

Work integrated learning
