Syllabus
This subject will cover the following topics:
Module 1 – Assessment: neurological; vascular; cutaneous. Foundational musculoskeletal assessment including digital deformities.
Module 2 – Foundational clinical practice: control of cross-infection; hand hygiene; instrument re-processing; podiatry equipment; setting up a clinical space; scalpel debridement; simple nail reduction; introduction to padding and deflective … For more content click the Read More button below.
Module 3 – Cutaneous disorders: nail disorders; infectious skin and nail conditions - bacterial, fungal and viral; antifungal drugs; treatment of plantar warts.
Module 4 – Clinical record keeping: review and interpret medical and treatment history; management planning: person-focused care; SMART goals - short and long-term management; rationale for medicines use in relation to a person’s history.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
differentiate normal from abnormal parameters in a range of common cutaneous pathology through description of aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management;
2.
perform assessments of the neurological, vascular, musculoskeletal and cutaneous systems in a simulated setting;
3.
safely perform routine skin and nail care in a simulated setting with due consideration of people and equipment;
4.
develop a simulated management plan for an uncomplicated podiatric presentation;
5.
demonstrate appropriate infection control, instrument sterilisation, and hand washing practices with due consideration of environmental sustainability issues; and
6.
review and interpret information in the person’s health records and discuss with the person their medical and treatment history, to contribute to an understanding of their needs and current treatment.

Restricted to students enrolled in the Undergraduate Certificate of Foot Health OR Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine.
