In this subject, students complete one supervised occupational therapy work-integrated learning (WIL) placement. This placement focuses on working with people who experience occupational dysfunction and/or may focus on planning or implementing an occupation-focused project. The placement provides students with the opportunity to manage their own caseload and to practice and consolidate their assessment, intervention, and evaluation skills. Students will also develop and extend their critical evaluation and reflective practice skills.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Applying communication skills in practice;Professional behaviour;Assessment and enabling strategies;Intervention planning and evaluation;Introduction to reflective practice;Beginning portfolio development;Fieldwork preparation; andThis subject will include one seven-week period of work-integrated learning placement.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

discuss the complexities of occupational therapy practice;

demonstrate competent verbal and written communication strategies;

demonstrate appropriate professional behaviours and engage in reflective practice;

plan and conduct formal and informal assessments of clients with supervision;

design and implement well-reasoned enabling strategies and/or occupation-focused projects;

evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented strategies and projects; and

demonstrate competency in occupational therapy practice in a professional setting.

Enrolment restrictions

Students must be enrolled in Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.

Details Students will complete a supervised placement at an allocated service/location.

The 32 days of placement will usually be undertaken on a full-time basis over a 7 week period (approx. 240 hours). Placement opportunities include public health services, hospitals, community health settings, disability services, private practice, schools and aged care. Student roles and responsibilities will vary according to the setting and may include planning and providing direct client services, assessment and report writing, contributing to a multi-disciplinary team and/or completing an occupation-based project relevant to the setting. Placements are allocated in a way that aims to support students to experience a range of practice settings and locations (e.g. regional, remote, metropolitan) during their work-integrated learning subjects.
