Opportunities will be provided to apply aspects of clinical nurse leadership that are relevant to students' area of practice and enhance understanding of leadership and management specific to the challenges faced by nurse leaders. Students will explore and integrate theoretical knowledge of transformative leadership approaches that support their current or future roles as leaders and managers. The subject is designed for nursing and midwifery leaders (expert clinicians, nursing and midwifery managers at all levels of health care) and will enable them to develop their leadership capacity in a way that leads to transformative change. Students will distinguish between different theories/models of leadership and management and apply their knowledge by developing a healthcare improvement proposal.  Content including ethical and legal issues, cultural safety, evidence-based practice, resilience, quality improvement and recruitment and retention of an emerging multigenerational workforce will be examined within the context of health care.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
demonstrate and apply knowledge of the role of nurses in leading healthcare improvement and project management;
2.
investigate the concepts of complexity and systems thinking and how they apply to leadership;
3.
apply contemporary healthcare management theories and practices to the administration and evaluation of care delivery systems and facilitation of collaborative models of care;
4.
examine the role of teamwork in healthcare improvement; and
5.
apply principles of change management in their current work environment.
