Handbook

This subject aims to provide students with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate foundation knowledge underpinning nursing skills in the following practice areas: health assessment and risk screening, maintaining and enhancing skin integrity, alteration in bowel and urinary function, pre and post operative care and patient education at a beginning level. In addition knowledge and skills will be demonstrated in non-parenteral medication administration and numeracy. Teaching strategies will include simulation, face to face tutorials and online lectures and activities (for distance education students this will involve a 4 day intensive). Students enrolling in this subject will undertake 80 hours of workplace learning in a variety of health care settings in a supernumerary capacity under the supervision of a registered nurse. Each student's workplace performance will be assessed using the Nursing Competency Assessment Schedule (NCAS). Students will be engaged in professional reflective practice to enhance and guide their clinical practice.
