Network Security

Abstract

As the digital threat landscape rapidly evolves, managing information technology (IT) network risk is of paramount importance to most organisations. This subject provides students with knowledge and skills in fundamental network security principles and practices. Students will be introduced to a range of key network security concepts and network security protocols, such as types of security threats, cryptography, wireless network security, cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) security. Some of the practices related to network security management will be briefly explored, focusing on network vulnerability and risk assessment.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to explain fundamental network security concepts;

be able to analyse the security threats to a network;

be able to evaluate and propose effective countermeasures for network security;

be able to identify and analyse the key components of cloud computing security; and

be able to discuss basic network security management functions, such as risk assessment, monitoring and auditing.
