This subject introduces students to social and human services elements of the disability sector. It will enable students to examine and critique how social and organisational processes contribute to the marginalisation of people of differing abilities, thus reinforcing a focus on "disabilities". It examines the main models of disability, including human rights based frameworks, enabling students to develop a critical analysis of the models. It also fosters a conception of differing abilities beyond these established models. Policy and program development in the disability field is analysed, informed by examination of philosophical changes, legal frameworks and critical concepts. Institutional factors which mediate disability, including contemporary policy developments and debates, are examined.
