Human Rights and Law for the Human Services (postgraduate)

Abstract

This subject will provide theoretical understanding and context for human rights practice and the law within social work and the human services. Employing problem-based learning and a decolonising approach, this subject covers the history and theories of human rights and draws on a human rights framework and rights-based practice. It also considers the foundational laws and legal issues required by graduates working in the broad field of social work and human services. Incorporating the twin themes of human rights and social justice, key topics include the legal environment, professional responsibility and accountability. Particular emphasis is given to rights-based practice and the ways that graduates might employ mechanisms that positively influence legal processes and outcomes for people from marginalised and disadvantaged backgrounds.

The legal, ethical and human rights obligations of human service workers such as duty of care (avoiding negligence), professional privilege and client information: privacy, confidentiality, record keeping, Freedom Of Information (FOI)
Elective topic exploring areas of human rights and the law (eg children, family violence, health, etc)
