This subject examines ageing and health in the community using broad bio-psycho-social and cultural perspectives. A theoretical model of critical social gerontology is introduced and ageism in community and health systems is identified and challenged. The social determinants of health in ageing are examined along with structural and policy issues associated with the health outcomes of older adults in the community, including older Indigenous Australians. These concepts are applied in examining key topics that show how social determinants differentially shape the health and wellbeing of older adults. Key topics include: life-long learning; nutrition, exercise and active ageing; work, retirement and income; housing, transport and environmental issues and age-friendly communities. Foundational academic skills for post-graduate study are imbedded in the subject content.
