Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics: Design principles for long-span implant supported fixed dental prostheses;The use of implants to assist in stabilisation, support and retention of removable dental prostheses;Success, failure and complications of implant therapy;Implant maintenance protocols; andProvision of implant treatment to patients.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
discuss implant restoration design for cases involving the replacement of multiple teeth;
2.
critically discuss the timing and loading considerations associated with implant placement of missing teeth and the implant replacement of teeth requiring extraction;
3.
critically discuss factors which may influence the success or failure of implants, and potential complications that may arise;
4.
discuss the advantages/disadvantages of fixed versus removable implant prostheses;
5.
discuss the importance of implant maintenance and the protocols employed in this phase of case management; and
6.
provide implant treatment and maintenance care to patients.

Enrolment is restricted to students in the Graduate Diploma Dental Implantology.
