Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
describe and apply basic concepts of professionalism and ethics, reflective practice, policies, sustainable practice, infection control, and workplace health and safety procedures effectively;
2.
identify and describe the tissues of the periodontium in health and in disease, the aetiology, classification and progression of periodontal disease and risk factors associated with the disease;
3.
describe and compare the physical and chemical properties of restorative, preventative and impression materials, their clinical indications and contra-indications, their chairside handling and their waste management processes, discussing their applications and implementing appropriately when required;
4.
identify carious and non-carious tooth loss, describe its aetiology and associated risk factors;
5.
describe and apply the main components of history taking and comprehensive examinations, patient prognosis, diagnosis, treatment planning and outcomes, preventative strategies and be able to summarise key elements of patient information;
6.
describe and apply the principles of radiography, including the different types of intra-oral radiographs, their indications, clinical techniques, and common errors, and accurately read and interpret radiographs; and
7.
identify, describe and utilise appropriate dental instruments, materials and medicaments to perform dental procedures safely and competently in the simulation clinic.
