Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Communication skills and professional behaviour (including career development and job application skills);Collection, preparation and analysis of clinical data and/or specimens;Maintenance and promotion of safe work practices; andReflective practice and portfolio development.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
demonstrate professional behaviour;
2.
explain how to collect, prepare and analyse clinical data and/or specimens;
3.
demonstrate problem solving and decision making skills within the laboratory;
4.
work independently and as a team member to solve problems and interpret data in a medical science workplace setting;
5.
communicate effectively in both written and oral format within a multidisciplinary workplace;
6.
demonstrate knowledge and application workplace health and safety and safe work practices relevant to the discipline;
7.
integrate information from various laboratory or other workplace sites in making decisions and to recognise appropriate responses to data discrepancies;
8.
describe the procedures employed to assess the accuracy, reproducibility and validity of current laboratory methods; and
9.
reflect on their experience and maintain a portfolio identifying clinical / practical experiences and the learning that has taken place as a result of these experiences; with specific reflection of their experience on the AIMS Competency-based Standards for Medical Scientists.

Students must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
