Critical Care Skills

Abstract

This subject is designed to assist students in the Critical Care stream of the Graduate Diploma/Master of Paramedicine to make a successful transition to the role of an Intensive Care Paramedic, or equivalent. The subject will build on students' previous paramedic qualifications and experience to focus their clinical practice on the advanced critical care skills implemented by advanced paramedics. Students have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision in controlled environments, including high fidelity clinical simulation.

Intensive School

This subject includes a 5-day intensive school where students will become familiar with advanced critical care equipment, skills associated with the critical care of patients and clinical practice guidelines.

The purpose of the intensive school is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student, allowing them an opportunity to receive timely feedback and support from the hands on experience. APS505 is an advanced critical care skills subject that incorporates skills such as finger tracheotomy, ultrasound, airway management and detailed advanced patient assessment procedures.
