Handbook

This subject extends students’ previous education and experience to advance the knowledge and specialised skills needed to provide critical care paramedicine for airway and respiratory emergencies. Students will further develop their ability to integrate assessment and diagnostic data, knowledge of relevant anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and evidence-informed practice to propose critical care paramedicine treatment plans. Students will also integrate specialised paramedic knowledge, theories and frameworks to develop the professional attributes and clinical reasoning skills required to perform advanced airway management.

This subject will cover the following topics:

• Airway and respiratory system-specific anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology;
• Airway and respiratory emergencies;
• Diagnostics for airway and respiratory emergencies;
• Airway and respiratory patient assessment and history-taking;
• Critical care paramedic treatment for airway and respiratory emergencies;
• Pharmacology relevant to airway and respiratory emergencies; and
• Paramedic knowledge, theories and frameworks for airway management.
