This subject focuses on usul al-tafsir (the methodology of Qur'anic exegesis) and ‘ulūm al-Qur’an (Qur’anic sciences). Students will critically analyse the concept of revelation, the transmission and collection of the Qur’anic text and some major fields of Qur’anic sciences such as the inimitability of the Qur’an, occasions of revelation, clear and ambiguous verses, the concept of abrogation along with tools used in textual analysis. The subject also addresses the evolution of Qur'anic exegetical methods to produce a rich literature of exegetical works. In addition, it investigates modern exegetical issues concerning the Qur'an together with a critical evaluation of how the modern history of the Muslim world has influenced contemporary exegetical works.

Distinguish terminology used in Qur'anic exegesis and critically evaluate various exegetical types

Use independent research skills, organisational abilities, and effective written and oral communication through the presentation of a substantial work
