In this subject students will find an approved pastoral counselling placement and a suitably qualified external clinical supervisor, in consultation with the subject coordinator, in order to develop and refine their practical expertise in the area of pastoral counselling. The subject will involve case study presentations, a journal, analysis of progress, reflections on aspects of internship experience and a supervisor's report.

Students will participate in pastoral counselling placement experience where they undertake a minimum of 40 hours of face to face pastoral counselling. Students will participate in pastoral counselling placement experience where they undertake a minimum of 40 hours of face to face pastoral counselling. Students are required to find their own placement in consultation with the subject coordinator. They are also required to have a minimum of 10 hours supervision for their pastoral counselling work with an external supervisor whose credentials comply with the PACFA Training Standards (2014).
The practical nature of this subject requires a process of directed critical reflection on the pastoral counselling completed during the placement. Students will be provided with a programme of readings with questions and exercises for reflection which will assist their learning during the course of their practical experience and completion of their assessment tasks. These will include:
Critical analysis and self reflection on the integration of theory, knowledge and skills within the person of the pastoral counsellor
Being a supervisee in pastoral counselling - learning how to learn; how to give and receive feedback; realistic self-evaluation; how to reflect; emotional awareness and how to dialogue
Supervision in pastoral counselling - developmental stages in supervision; approaches to supervision; roles and responsibilities in supervision; supervision groups; problems in the supervisory process
Utilisation of self-reflective skills in pastoral counselling practice and supervision
Professional Development - stages of counsellor growth; accessing appropriate ongoing professional development.

Details In this subject students will find an approved pastoral counselling placement and a suitably qualified external clinical supervisor, in consultation with the subject coordinator, in order to develop and refine their practical expertise in the area of pastoral counselling. The subject will involve 40 client hours and 10 hours of supervision, plus case study presentations, a journal, analysis of progress, reflections on aspects of internship experience and a supervisors report.

Learning activities

Mandatory Intensive

There will be two intensives for this subject, each of 3 days, one held in each semester. The lecturer will provide expert supervision in a group setting for cases presented by students. Students will be required to present cases at a professional standard, to critically reflect on their pastoral counselling and to demonstrate a high order of skill in analysis, critical evaluation and professional application in presentation of an area of pastoral counselling encountered in their placement.
