Abstract

This subject encompasses a range of first-year physics topics selected to provide a sufficiently broadbased, yet relevant physics foundation for students pursuing science, teaching, medical radiation science and optometry. The subject covers topics in Newtonian mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, waves and optics.

Syllabus

Kinematics;Dynamics;Elasticity;Fluids;Thermal Physics;Waves; andOptics.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
be able to outline the principles of and perform calculations in kinematics and dynamics;
2.
be able to explain the concepts and perform calculations in elasticity and fluids;
3.
be able to explain the concepts and perform calculations in thermal physics;
4.
be able to demonstrate comprehension and perform calculations involving waves and optics; and
5.
be able to compute and solve problems of a conceptual and quantitative nature in the above areas of physics.
