Use of calculator, significant figures, scientific notation Algebra Geometry, measurement, the SI system of units Graphs and functions Arithmetic and geometric series Logarithms and exponential functions Exponential growth and decay Trigonometry and vectors Calculus of elementary functions

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
be able to carry out calculations and use algebra accurately;
2.
be able to plot and interpret graphs;
3.
be able to apply exponential and logarithmic laws, and examine the behaviour of population and decay;
4.
be able to calculate the sums of arithmetic and geometric series and use them in simple financial calculations;
5.
be able to use vectors in scientific applications;
6.
be able to use the basic rules of differentiation and calculate derivatives of elementary functions;
7.
be able to use the basic rules of integration and calculate integrals of polynomial functions; and
8.
be able to interpret and write about applications of mathematics in their field of study.

Assumed knowledge

Mathematics to at least the level of HSC Mathematics Standard.

Enrolment restrictions

Students can only enrol in MTH400 with the approval of the Course Director
