Abstract

This subject will introduce radiation therapy students to theoretical and practical applications of treatment planning. Students explore therapeutic dose behaviours in tissue using manual calculation methods, the role of immobilisation at simulation to optimise treatment planning, 3D planning system contouring, controls and 3D conformal radiation therapy planning.

Syllabus

MODULE 1: SimulationMRI and PET;Target delineation;Contouring;Stabilisation; andMould room techniques, masks, electron cut-outs etc.MODULE 2: Calculations and dose generationMODULE 3: PlanningCT planning;Radiation physics and biology including dose limits of sensitive organs; andPlan development and critique.MODULE 4: Development of radiation therapy treatment plansOncological emergencies;Digestive system;Genitourinary;Respiratory;Breast; andGynaecological.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
be able to describe and apply principles of practice in radiation therapy with specific reference to appropriate use of stabilisation devices, knowledge and application of treatment planning and dosimetry (MRPBA Domain 1C.1 and 3);
2.
be able to describe, explain and implement professional practice through integrating anatomy, physiology and pathology, apply the principles of physics and instrumentation, utilise patient information management systems, determine appropriate procedures, and manage / manipulate 3D datasets (MRPBA Domain 1);
3.
be able to describe and apply the principles of radiation safety and risk management (domain 5) with specific reference to safe radiation practice (MRPBA Domain 5); and
4.
be able to explain and apply the principles of evidence-based practice and professional learning with specific reference to critical and reflective thinking to resolve clinical challenges (MRPBA Domain 4).
