This subject will introduce foundational laboratory skills necessary for a career in medical science or research. Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics: Introduction to the laboratory and safety;The microscope;Foundational chemistry;Foundational anatomy/physiology;The importance of chemistry and anatomy for the medical science laboratory; andInterpretation of experimental results.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1.
identify laboratory equipment and glassware and demonstrate knowledge of laboratory workplace health and safety procedures;
2.
demonstrate general laboratory skills important in medical science and research;
3.
demonstrate proficiency in making dilutions and calculating the correct dilution factors of general laboratory solutions;
4.
demonstrate proficiency in the use of a microscope and Kohler illumination;
5.
use general laboratory equipment for chemistry experiments like volumetric analysis, chemical equilibria, acid-base equilibria and others;
6.
use general laboratory equipment for experiments relevant to medical science; and
7.
interpret and calculate experimental results.
