Master of Education (with specialisations)

Overview

The course aims to qualify education professionals to apply advanced knowledge and skills to educational contexts, to increase awareness of the importance of practitioner research, and to encourage and permit the critical appraisal of policy, theory, and practice in the education professions. The course improves professional competence for educators, enlarges capacity for self-development and serves as a pathway for further learning. It aims to prepare graduates for educational leadership across a range of contexts.

Entry Requirement

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Education (generic and with specialisations) must have at least the following minimum qualifications: Hold the degree of Bachelor of Education (or AQF equivalent) from an approved tertiary institution and a minimum of one year of professional experience in a relevant field of study; or Hold the degree of Bachelor of Education (Honours) (or AQF equivalent) from an approved tertiary institution and a minimum of one year of professional experience in a relevant field of study; or Hold a Bachelor degree (or AQF equivalent) from an approved tertiary institution with an end-on integrated professional teaching qualification (such as a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor of Teaching) and a minimum of one year of professional experience in the relevant field of study; or Possess other qualifications and/or work experience deemed to be AQF equivalent; and complete any additional qualifying subjects or course prescribed by the Faculty.

International credit packages
1. Under a formal agreement with the Ontario Principals' Council (OPC) and Catholic Principals' Council of Ontario students who successfully complete the 'Masters Dimension Enhanced Principals' Qualification Program' (PQP) will receive transfer credit (TCR) for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership & ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations (16 points).
2. Students who have completed the 'Standard Dimension PQP 1 and 2' through a recognised Ontario College of Teachers provider will receive transfer credit (TCR) for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership (8 points).
3. Students who have completed a 'Three-part Additional Qualifications Specialist' (recognised by the Ontario College of Teachers) will receive credit represented as EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (8 points).
4. Students who have completed two 'Three-part Additional Qualifications Specialist' (recognised by the Ontario College of Teachers) will receive transfer credit represented as EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (16 points).
5. Students who have completed an 'Honours Specialist in one area of specialisation' (recognised by the Ontario College of Teachers) will receive transfer credit represented as EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (8 points).
6. Students who have completed an 'Honours Specialist in two areas of specialisation' (recognised by the Ontario College of Teachers) will receive transfer credit represented as EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (16 points).
7. Students who have completed a 'Combined Honours Specialist' (recognised by the Ontario College of Teachers) will receive transfer credit represented as EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (16 points).
8. Students who successfully complete the 'Experienced Principal’s Development Course' (EPDC) receive transfer credit for ESA509 Advanced School Leadership (8 points).
9. Students who successfully complete the Ontario Principals' Council 'Leading Educators Across the Planet' program (LEAP) receive transfer credit TCR for ESA512 International Education Leadership (8 points).
10. Students who successfully complete the Ontario Principals' Council 'Special Education for Administrators' (SEA) program receive transfer credit represented as EDU51C (8 points).
11. Students who successfully complete the Ontario Principals’ Council 'International School Leadership Certificate 1.0 Plus Module 13- the Masters Dimension' will receive transfer credit (TCR) for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership, ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations and ESA509 Advanced School Leadership (24 points).
12. Students who successfully complete the Ontario Principals’ Council 'International School Leadership Certificate Standard' will receive transfer credit (TCR) for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership and ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations (16 points).

2. Students who successfully complete the Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Evolve: New Principals' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership, ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations and EDU51C Education Studies Level 5 subject (24 points).
3. Students who successfully complete the Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Impact: Emerging Leaders' will receive transfer credit for EEB504 Data Informed Practice and ESA503 Leading Educational Change (16 points).
4. Students who successfully complete the Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Impact: Inspire Local Leaders' will receive transfer credit for EEL510 Leading Professional Learning Organisations and EPT502 Issues in Professional Learning (16 points).
5. Students who successfully complete the Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Leading Excellence in Classroom Practice' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership and ESA503 Leading Educational Change.
6. Students who successfully complete a Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Leading Literacy, Leading Mathematics, Leading Pedagogy or Leading Curriculum and Assessment' will receive transfer credit transfer credit represented as EDU51C (8 points).
7. Students who successfully complete the Australian Independent Schools (AIS) 'Flagship Program' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership, ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations and ESA509 Advanced School Leadership (24 points).
8. Students who successfully complete the Bastow Institute for School Leadership course 'Unlocking Potential: Principal Preparation' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership, ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations, ESA509 Advanced School Leadership and ESA503 Leading Educational Change (32 points).
9. Students who successfully complete the Queensland Education Leadership Institute course 'Leadership for Middle School Leaders' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership & EEL510 Leading Professional Learning Organisations (16 points).
10. Students who successfully complete the Queensland Education Leadership Institute course 'Leadership for Deputy Principals' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership & ESA503 Leading Educational Change (16 points).
11. Students who successfully complete the Queensland Education Leadership Institute course 'Leadership for Principals' will receive transfer credit for ESA501 Mapping the Field of Educational Leadership & ESA502 Educational Leadership in Contemporary Organisations (16 points).

Students who successfully complete the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) 'Assessment to Promote Learning (GCEASL01), Estimating Student Progress (GCEASL03) and Using Assessment Evidence to Inform Teaching and Learning (GCEASL04)' will receive transfer credit (TCR) for EDU51C Education Level 5 Subject (24 points).
17. Students who successfully complete the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) 'Assesment Methods (GCEASL02)' will receive transfer credit (TCR) for ESS422 Assessment and Evaluation for Learning (8 points).

The course consists of three core subjects (24 points) and either 40 points of restricted electives for the Master of Education or completion of a specialisations (40 points) for the Master of Education (with specialisation).

In addition to the elective options listed above, up to two other subjects (worth 16 credit points) that are suitable and relevant to the aims and objectives of this course may be selected as electives from within or external to the University, with prior written permission from the Course Director.
